  • Goodbye, Dear Friends

February 26, 2009 – the saddest day in Bulls history

Yesterday, in a matter of mere hours, we lost two of the most beloved members of the Chicago Bulls family.  Stormin’ Norman Van Lier and Johnny “Red” Kerr epitomized what it meant to be a Chicago Bull – eating, breathing and sleeping the game and team they loved so much.  My only memories of their playing (and Red’s coaching) days come from the United Center pregame montage, but I personally know that watching a Bulls game will never, ever be the same.

The one thing I’ve always done and always demanded my teammates do is play with passion.  I connected with Norm on this level.  I always appreciated his ability and willingness to say what I wanted to say, never afraid to call out a team that lacked passion and heart, like he did here.

I was a big Harry Caray fan – BIG.  He could make me laugh and was a fan just like me.  Red was the same, but on a different level.  His ability to combine his wit and many quips with his knowledge and passion for basketball was a true joy to experience.  I finished a game thoroughly entertained, but also a smarter basketball fan than when I first sat down.  Red single-handedly made the Tim Floyd era bearable for me.

To say these guys will be missed would be a gross understatement.  Heaven pulled off a hell of a trade yesterday.

Tonight I lift my glasses to Stormin’ Norman and Red.

  • Happy Birthday, MJ

You, Michael Jordan, His Airness, My First Hero, turn 46 today.  Happy birthday, my friend.

As I grow older and witness season after season of mediocrity (and worse) in the stadiums and fields of Chicago, I become increasingly appreciative of what you gave to me and to this city.  I was a mere lad of 14 when you brought us your sixth and final championship - my last taste of greatness at its pinnacle - and I can't help but wish I were a bit older and wiser.  Aside from taking you, your teammates and your consistent success for granted, I never fully grasped the depth of your brilliance (not to mention championship celebrations could've been a little more "fun" than banging pots and pans in my driveway).  I only caught the tail end, the best end, of an amazing ride.

I have yet to grow up with a star who dominates his sport like you did, and I still believe could.  As I watch our young Derrick's flashes of rookie greatness, I can't help but imagine that the feeling I have is the same that the people of Chicago had watching your early years in Chicago Bull red.  I can only hope he gives us a ride with a fraction of the excitement and moments of elation that you gave us.

Tonight I lift my glass to you.  Happy birthday.

  • Let the Countdown Begin

Welcome to Black Monday. Every year as I nurse my Super Bowl hangover and my MGD/Patron/white wine spritzer hangover, it suddenly dawns on me that it's going to be a long while before we watch some meaningful football. 217 days to be exact.

Thanks to the Chicago Tribune, I won't have to focus all of my sports attention on the upcoming Bulls- Grizzlies matchup when I'm digging my car out of two feet of snow in below zero temperatures on a Tuesday morning in February. (I'm not ready for this...)

But alas, let the countdown begin...

    Combine: 16 days

Start of free agency: 25 days

    Draft: 81 days

    Training camp: About 161 days

    Preseason: 186 days

    Regular season: 217 days

Bears in Super Bowl XLIV: 370 days

  • It Could Always Be Worse...

During the many depressing Bear moments this year, I always reminded myself that it could have been worse. We could have been Detroit (and I didn't just mean football...). It worked.

Well tonight, while I was watching some crappy basketball by a team of Bulls that don't care, I started to get that all-too-familiar pissed-off feeling.

    And then I read this.

Suddenly, things don't seem so bad...

  • Wednesday's Stat of the Day

    113

That's how many points the Bulls have averaged over their 8 game home winning streak.

This includes last night's season high 127 in a win over the KG-less Celtics.  John Salmons rocked the joint with 38 and Brad Miller threw in 21 and 14 boards.

Now if we could only get this whole "road" thing figured out...

  • Friday's Stat of the Day

    67 (of course)

That's the number of minutes Jonny Flynn played in last nights epic 6 OT win against UConn in the Big East tournament.  Oh yeah, that was out of a possible 70.  Some other incredible stats include...

    - The game lasted 3 hours 46 minutes
    - 244 points were scored; 102 after regulation
    - 8 players fouled out
    - 6 players recorded double-doubles

    and my personal favorite

    - Syracuse never lead in overtime until the sixth OT

On a side note, no current UConn Huskie has ever won a Big East tournament game.

  • Wednesday's Stat of the Day

On the Bulls radio pregame show last night, The Swirs asked Bill Wennington to make a case for Dwight Howard as MVP.  And like he did so many times from 1994-1999, the Canadian Basketball Hall of Famer delivered.  (On a side note, how good does a Beef Wennington sound right now??)

Wennington used LeBron James, considered the favorite in the MVP race, and Kobe Bryant, considered a close second, as a base for comparison.  As you can see below, Bron Bron and Kobe rank 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in points per game, but are not in the top 5 of any of the other major statistical categories.  Superman, on the other hand, is 1st in both rebounds and blocks and third in field goal percentage.  Have a looksee.

Another interesting stat our favorite Canuck pointed out is that DH ranks 15th in points per game even though he has shot 37% fewer shots than The Chosen One and 42% fewer shots than The Black Mamba.  If instead of shooting 60% from the foul line Howard had shot, say 75%, he would rank eigth in points per game.

Whether you think Dwight Howard deserves the MVP or not, it certainly paints an interesting picture.

Either way, not bad for a 23 year old...

While watching some d-line combine action reruns last night (sad, yes), Steve Mariucci mentioned something that caught my ear about San Jose State's Jarron Gilbert: he can jump out of a pool.  Sensing my doubt, Mooch proclaimed "YouTube it if you don't believe me!"  So I did.

And it was just plain silly...
